Wilhem (William) Steinitz
(1836-1900)

Born in Austria, William Steinitz was one of the most influential players and writers in the history of the game. He came to the US in 1882 and soon declared his desire to live here. In 1886 he became the first official world champion by winning a match against Johann Zukertort played in New York, St. Louis and New Orleans. In 1888, Steinitz completed the required five-year residency and became a US citizen. He held the world crown until 1894. His presence was a major factor in the development of chess in this country.
