Fred Reinfeld

Reinfeld authored over 100 books on chess according to standard bibliographical sources. His numerous instructional works dealt with all aspects of chess from opening to endgame, each explaining principles in a way that struck a compromise between being too simple and too technical. As a result, uncounted thousands of players have received a painless introduction to the appreciation of chess history.

He was a strong player as well, winning the 1933 New York State championship ahead of Fine, Santasiere, and Denker. But it is because of his role as one of the all-time great popularizers of American chess that he richly deserves enshrinement in the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame.
